High Functing Autism

People with high-functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome do not have the delayed language development that's typically found in people with autism. In addition, people with high-functioning autism have average or above average intelligence. However, they may show other behaviors and signs similar to what's seen with other types of autism: delay in motor skills lack of skill in interacting with others little understanding of the abstract uses of language, such as humor or give-and-take in a conversation obsessive interest in specific items or information strong reactions to textures, smells, sounds, sights, or other stimuli that others might not even notice, such as a flickering light Unlike people with other forms of autism, people with high-functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome want to be involved with others. They simply don't know how to go about it. They may not be able to understand others' emotions. They may not read facial expressions or body language well. As a result, they may be teased and often feel like social outcasts. The unwanted social isolation can lead to anxiety and depression.

porud momma

I am a proud momma.Never in all the time we have known about carters autism did I think we would have this moment. Carter had a speaking part in his Christmas musical tonight and did wonderful. It was a dialogue and he was funny too. We had a break down at practice, he cried and got all blotchy, we both cried, he did brain gym and drank his water and I prayed. He had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the drama and then proceeded to pick a wedgie as he was headed back to his spot but he was wonderful. Did I mention he had a broken arm? Only two blood vessels have popped in my head...

Little things have been happening that make me angry. The kind of angry that that make me want to scream until my eyes pop out of my head.
You know like a momma bear defending her cubs. Only I have God telling me take a deep breath and learn. My instincts have never been so at war with my faith in God.
Carter has been having nightmares about kids making fun of him, telling others not to play with him. He is hurt. I am hurting for him. I wish I could trade places with him so bad. Why do people see the differences and not the pureness of Carter. he is the most fascinating most loyal, loving child. I want everyone to see what I see. '
The part of me that is not in denial says "this is going to happen, he will be different" but my heart says "he loves God and people, he has come so far...why? why be hurtful?"
So the leason I have learned in being Carter and Colemans mom is; love others, don't look at the difference but the commonalities. You kids see you. Your kids mimic you. Love.
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34”

and the leason to myself...“If you love those who love you (or my son), what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

poop

Sometimes the world of autism takes over my life and I go into control mode. Get enough sleep, don't eat anything with red dye, do our brain gym. It takes over. Poor carter is the sweetest thing. He is the funniest, smartest little boy Ive ever met. He is 100%honest. We went to the doctors office the other day for a sinus infection and the secretary asked Carter how his day was. I always get a little nervous but when he said... "Well, after PE I had to poo poo and it wouldn't come out. So i need raisins and water to make it smoother..." I was mortified. What do you say? sorry? ummm... i grabbed him and ran. I said to Carter we don't talk about poop in normal conversation, not everyone wants to hear about your BM. He was shocked! What people are not interested in his poop? ha ha

refill

My family went to Chili's for dinner tonight. Our waitress asked us if we needed a refill on anything and Carter yells "I'd like a refill on my pizza, Thanks."

The Devils tests

Carter announced after school today that he took the Devils test. He meant Dibbles but when i tried to tell him it was dibbles not Devils he corrected me. All standardized test are from the devil so this is fairly accurate.

pray for rain

Louisiana has had a major drought for the last few months. No ones grass is green. We have had 38 days of triple digit heat. today was 109'. So we have been praying for rain the last few months, but I didn't know Carter was paying much attention. We walked out side and the sprinklers were on and he grabbed Coleman and my hand and prayed "thank you Lord for the water you have given us"...I wish

I see you from my whole life

Last night we are driving home from a family dinner at the Pratt's and Carter starts crying, tears and everything. I asked what was wrong and he says "I miss my preK teacher" I said " Do you mean Mrs. Sheri?" he said yes, I need to talk to her, cuz I miss her"
He said to tell Mrs Sheri in an email "I love you Mrs Sheri. because I see you from my whole life." love Carter
He is so sweet. He loves deeply and it cracks me up that he think of people randomly.
